A New View of New York: Jihye’s Story

Our wonderful VOA intern Jihye Choi, who comes from Korea, shares her second photo essay of pictures from America. Last time, the photos were of Washington, D.C., where she lives and works. This time, she had a chance to visit New York City and shares some great photos and stories from her trip.  I’m from New York, and I haven’t even seen all the places she visited!

Hello again! How have you been doing? Did you miss me?

Since Monday (22nd of February) was a public holiday (Presidents’ Day) in the States, I decided to go for a short trip for 3 days. As you can see above, I went to New York, which is the biggest city in the U.S.A.

Because I didn’t have enough time to see all of New York, I only looked around Manhattan at this time. This place was far beyond of my imagination. I found a lot of interesting spots that I want to introduce to you.

So, I’m going to take you on a short tour around NY! You will see not only classic tour spots, but also unknown attractions of Manhattan.

#1 Times Square

Above is Times Square. I assume that you already know about this place, this is why I chose this photo to start with. I couldn’t see any street lights around Times Square, because it was way too bright due to all the advertisements. I think it is the best place to see a facet of capitalism. There were a lot of shops at the Times Square, and I went to two of them – M&M world and Toys R Us.

#1. 타임스퀘어

위 사진은 타임스퀘어랍니다. 여러분들이 모두 아실거라고 생각해서 시작하는 사진으로 한 번 골라 봤어요. 타임스퀘어 주변에는 가로등이 없어요. 왜냐하면 (당연하게도) 모든 광고들 때문에 너무너무 밝기 때문이에요. 저는 이 곳이 자본주의의 한 단면을 보기에 가장 적합한 장소라고 생각해요. 타임스퀘어에는 여러가지 상점들이 많은데, 저는 그 중에 두 군데를 가 보았답니다. m&m 월드와 Toys R us라는 장난감 가게를 가 보았어요.

#2. Toys R Us _ ‘Power Rangers Samurai’

My second tour spot is ‘Toys R Us’ in Times Square. It’s heaven for children. I have a younger brother who is in elementary school now, and I am sure he could spend a whole day in this store. So I strongly recommend to go here if you visit NY with children.

Anyway, right after I entered this store I found very interesting heroes standing at the door…Power Rangers Samurai!

If you know Chinese letters, you can easily figure out what those masks mean. The yellow one means soil (ground), blue one means water, red one means fire, green one means a tree, and pink one means sky. These Power Rangers also have swords that look Japanese.

It was so impressive to me because this character shows how Americans accept Asian features. For me (of course, this doesn’t mean every Korean feels the same way as I do!), Chinese characters symbolize something that’s traditional and old, something I should not play with. I have never thought that it could be on Power Rangers’ masks.

I really wonder how Chinese or Japanese people would feel about this. It will be so interesting for them to see it, I think. This picture shows how differently people accept other cultures based on their own cultures.

In my case, it feels a bit unnatural to see traditional features merged into commercial product. I would really like to hear your opinion about this photo! I guess we all have different thoughts. What do you feel after seeing this photo?

#2. Toys R Us _’파워레인져 사무라이’

두번째 관광하실 곳은 타임스퀘어에 있는 ‘Toys R Us’ 라는 장난감 가게에요. 여긴 정말 아이들의 천국같은 곳이랍니다. 저는 초등학교에 다니는 동생이 있는데요, 제 동생이 이 곳에서 하루 온종일을 보낼 수도 있을 거 같다는 생각이 들 만큼 너무 멋진 곳이었어요. 혹시 아이들과 함께 뉴욕을 방문하신다면 이곳을 방문하기를 강력하게! 추천드려요.
어쨌든, 이 장난감가게를 들어가자마자 저는 벽 앞에 서 있는 정말 흥미로운 영웅들 ‘파워레인저 사무라이’! 를 보았답니다. 지금부터 왜 이게 저에게 흥미로운지 알려드릴게요.
혹시 한자를 아신다면 (한국분들은 당연히 아시리라고 생각하지만요! ㅋㅋ), 이 마스크들이 무엇을 뜻하는지 쉽게 아실 수 있을거에요. 노란 마스크는 땅을, 파란 파스크는 물을, 빨간 마스크는 불을, 초록색 마스크는 나무를, 그리고 분홍색 마스크는 하늘을 뜻한답니다. 그리고 이 파워레인져들은 일본의 것처럼 보이는 검을 들고있기도 해요.
저는 이 파워레인져들이 정말 인상깊었어요. 이 캐릭터들이 미국사람들은 어떻게 아시아의 특징들을 받아들이는지를 보여주고 있었기 때문이죠.저에게 한자는 제가 함부로 가지고 놀면 안 되는 전통적이고 오래된 것을 상징하는 것 같아요 (물론 모든 한국사람이 그런건 아니겠지만요). 그래서 저는 한자가 파워레인져들의 마스크 위에 올라갈 수 있다고는 상상해 본 적도 없답니다.
저는 중국사람들이나 일본사람들이 이 파워레인져를 본다면 무엇을 생각하고 또 어떤 것을 느낄지가 정말 궁금해요. 이 캐릭터들은 중국사람들이나 일본사람들에게 굉장히 흥미로울 것 같아요.
이 사진은 사람들이 자신들의 문화에 따라서 얼마나 다르게 다른 문화를 받아들이는지를 보여준답니다. 제 경우에는, 전통적인 특징이 상업적인 상품으로 녹아들어간 것이 약간 부자연스럽게 느껴져요.

#3. M&M’s world

Welcome to heaven!

If you’ve read my first photo story of Washington, you would recognize that I really like sweet foods. I love ice cream and chocolate! Can you imagine how excited I was when I heard that there is an M&M World in New York? Not a store, but a world!!  This was one of the most important reasons why I went to New York.

After arriving in Times Square, I could see a lot of people who were carrying M&M’s bags. I looked around Times Square to find where this M&M’s world is… and then, there it was!! There was a gigantic electronic display which was showing M&M’s characters’ video. It was sudden and magical, just like a sign from the sweets gods. I was attracted by inexplicable power… and there was my dream come true!

I fell into a trance right after I opened the door of M&M’s World. I can’t remember what happened in there but after a while, I found myself holding a lot of souvenirs about M&M’s. Chocolates of course, a pack of cards, a mug, and postcards… I should have warned myself before entering this magical place!

#3. M&M’s world

천국에 오신것을 환영합니다!

이전에 올린 포토에세이 (A Korean student’s adventures in Washington D.C.- http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=157320114320939&aid=53237) 를 보신 분이라면, 제가 달콤한 음식들을 정말 좋아한다는 것을 대충 짐작하셨을 거에요. 저는 아이스크림도 좋고 초콜렛도 너무너무 좋아해요! 이런 제가 뉴욕에 ‘M&M 월드’가 있다는 것을 들었을 때 얼마나 신나했는지 상상이 가시나요? M&M 가게가 아니라, M&M 월드라구요!! >_< 타임스퀘어에 도착하고 나서 저는 많은 사람들이 M&M 월드의 쇼핑백을 들고 돌아다니는 것을 봤어요. 그래서 M&M월드를 찾으려고 주위를 둘러보았죠.. 그리고 그 곳에!! M&M캐릭터들의 비디오를 보여주고 있는 큰 전광판이 있었어요. 모든 달콤한 것들의 신의 계시인 것처럼, 갑작스럽고 신비롭게 제게 나타난거죠. 저는 어떤 설명할 수 없는 힘에 의해 이끌렸고… 그리고 제 꿈의 장소가 그 곳에 있었어요! 저는 M&M 월드의 문을 열자마자 넋을 잃었답니다. 그곳에서 어떤 일이 일어났는지 기억할 수는 없지만… 잠시 후에 저는 M&M에 관한 많은 기념품들을 들고 있는 제 자신을 발견했어요. 당연히 초콜렛도 있었고, 트럼프 카드며, 머그컵, 그리고 엽서들까지… 이 마법의 장소에 들어가기 전에 저는 제 자신에게 주의를 주었어야 헀어요. 위 사진은 M&M 자판기의 사진이에요. M&M월드에 가시면 이런 멋진 자판기들로 가득 찬 벽들을 찾으실 수가 있답니다. 저는 하늘색과 하얀색을 좋아하기 때문에 하얀색M&M과 하늘색 M&M들로 가득 찬 초콜렛 한 봉지를 샀어요. 여러분이 만약 M&M월드에 간다면, 어떤 색깔의 초콜렛을 살 지 생각해 보셨어요? M&M 초콜렛들의 기막힌 조합을 만들어 낼 아이디어가 있다면 댓글을 달아주세요! #4. Gotham city

Because we visited heaven before, I guess it’s time to show you the dark face of NY? Let me tell you a short story about this photo first.

Because it was my first time to visit N.Y., I actually didn’t know where the Empire State Building is and what it looks like. I just knew that it would be tall, big, and I might be able to see the building from a lot of areas in Manhattan. So, when I found the building in the photo, I thought that is the Empire State Building, since I saw that building a lot in the movies and dramas, and because it’s quite high.

Me and my friends totally thought it was the building we wanted to go to. We were so excited and kept running toward the building, before I found that it is actually NOT the Empire State Building. We couldn’t find any tourists around the building, the entrance was even closed… and I saw the sign saying ‘Chrysler building.’ I was devastated…

It was really cold and windy at that time. Because I was frustrated and exhausted, when I looked around everything seemed a bit different. That was not a fabulous and lively New York… it just looked like Gotham City. Did you know that Batman’s Gotham city was based on Manhattan, New York?

Batman writer and editor Dennis O’Neil has said that, figuratively, “Batman’s Gotham City is Manhattan below Fourteenth Street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November.” So here we are! In a real Gotham City.

Above is the photo I took near the Chrysler building. It was dark, I could see the smoke sneaking out of manholes. I photoshoped this photo a little bit to make the atmosphere of this scene more clear. How does it look like to you? Does it look like Gotham city to you? Can you feel that Batman is watching you? I think I can…. Look!! There’s the Batman!! And there, too!!!! Can you see the Batmans in this photo? How many?

#4. 고담시티 이전 사진에서 이미 천국을 둘러보았으니, 이제 뉴욕의 어두운 면을 보여드릴 차례가 온 것 같아요. 우 선 이 사진에 얽힌 일화를 먼저 이야기해 드릴게요. 이번에 처음으로 뉴욕에 갔을 때, 저는 사실 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩이 어떻게 생겼는지, 어디 있었는지도 몰랐어요. 빌딩이 높고 크고, 그리고 아마도 맨하탄의 여러 장소에서 볼 수 있겠다.. 라는 것 정도만 알고 있었어요. 그래서 제가 사진에 있는 저 건물을 찾았을 때, 저는 저 건물이 당연히 엠파이어 스테이트빌딩이라고 생각했어요. 영화나 드라마에서 많이 본 건물이기도 했고, 굉장히 높기도 했기 때문이었죠. 저와 제 친구들은 저희가 가려고 했던 건물이 바로 저 건물이라고 확신했어요. 저희는 너무 신이 나서 건물이 있는 쪽으로 계속 달려갔답니다…. 제가 그 빌딩이 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩이 ‘아니’라는 것을 발견하기 전까지는요. ㅠㅠ 저희는 그 건물 근처에서 관광객들을 찾을 수 없었고, 심지어 입구는 닫혀있었어요. 그리고 저는 ‘크라이슬러 빌딩’ 이라고 쓰여진 간판을 보았답니다. 정말 울고싶은 마음뿐이었어요. ㅜㅜ 날 씨는 정말 추웠고 바람이 많이 불었어요. 제가 많이 지쳐있고 실망했었기 때문에, 갑자기 제 주변은 저에게 약간 다르게 보이기 시작했답니다. 더 이상 뉴욕은 멋지고 활기찬 뉴욕이 아니었어요. 뉴욕은 그저 고담시티처럼 보였답니다. 혹시 ‘배트맨’의 고담시티가 뉴욕의 맨하탄을 배경으로 만들어졌다는 사실 알고 계셨나요? ‘배트맨’의 작가이자 편집자인 Dennis O’Neil은 비유적으로 ‘ 배트맨의 고담시티는 11월의 가장 추운 날, 12시 11분의 맨하탄의 14번가의 아래쪽이다’ 라고 이야기했어요. 자, 그래서 지금 여기! 진짜 고담 시티에 우리가 있네요! 위 사진은 크라이슬러 빌딩 주변에서 제가 찍은 사진이에요. 굉장히 어두웠고, 맨홀 바깥으로 스멀스멀 새어나오는 연기들을 볼 수 있었죠. 이 사진의 분위기를 조금 더 명확하게 만들기 위해서 조금 포토샵을 했어요. 여러분에게는 이 사진이 어떻게 보이시나요? 고담시티처럼 보이나요? 배트맨이 여러분을 지켜보고 있는 것이 느껴지시나요? 저는…. 느낄 수 있는 것 같아요…….. 저길보세요!! 배트맨이 있어요!! 아 그리고 저기에도 있네요! 여러분은 이 사진에서 배트맨을 보실 수 있나요? 얼마나 많이요?

#5 Joe’s Pizza – Where Spiderman had a part time job.

Speaking of Batman, do you like superheroes? It you do, which one is your favorite? I really like superhero movies. I like Batman (definitely Christopher Nolan’s series!), Spiderman (it’s sad that Toby won’t do this anymore, right?), Hulk, Ironman etc. I can’t pick my favorite one because I love all of them.

This is why I chose to go to Joe’s Pizza rather than going to Magnolia bakery (from ‘Sex And The City’) or Serendipity 3 (which was in the movie Serendipity). As you can guess, it was hard decision because I had to give up cupcakes and frozen hot chocolate… I would like to show you those places if I visit them later!

Now you probably wonder how Joe’s Pizza relates to superheroes. Does anybody remember Spiderman had a part-time job in a small pizza shop? He once delivered pizza in the Spiderman outfit, too! Yeah you are right, this is the pizza shop where Spiderman worked!

At first I just wanted to take pictures of the shop. Because I had an appointment that night, I really didn’t want to eat anything. The place was quite small and it was crowded. There were two people who worked (and one of them was in the Spiderman 2 movie!!). And right after I saw the pizzas and smelled them…. Umm….. They seduced me.

I eventually bought a slice of pizza, which was one of the best slices of pizzas I’ve ever eaten. While I was enjoying the pizza, I looked the photos of many famous people who visited this place. And!!! I found a photo of Barney Stinson too! For those of you who don’t know about this name, it’s the name of one character in an American sitcom, How I Met Your Mother (the character is played by actor Neil Patrick Harris). I have lots more photos of the inside of the pizza place, I have them on Facebook.

I finished eating the slice of pizza. It was a little bit crispy, but in the meantime the cheese and sauce was so soft and juicy. When I took the first bite, ahhhh … now I should stop it. I am starving now. I feel like I was in the movie, and I could enjoy the best pizza at the same time!

Do you want to visit here someday? If you will go there again, please try pepperoni pizza for me! I chose fresh mozzarella pizza, so I couldn’t try that one. You have to try pepperoni and tell me what it’s like!

#5. Joe’s Pizza – 스파이더맨이 아르바이트를 했던 곳 배트맨 이야기를 하니까 생각난건데, 여러분은 슈퍼히어로 캐릭터를 좋아하시나요? 좋아하시다면 여러분이 가장 좋아하는 슈퍼히어로는 누군가요? 저 는 슈퍼히어로 영화들을 굉장히 좋아해요. 저는 배트맨 시리즈 (당연히 크리스토퍼 놀란의 시리즈 말이에요!)도 좋아하고, 스파이더맨 시리즈 (토비 맥과이어가 더 이상 스파이더맨 시리즈에 출연하지 않는다니.. ㅜㅜ)도 좋아하고, 헐크도 좋아하고 아이언맨도 좋아해요. 모든 슈퍼히어로들을 너무 좋아하기 때문에 하나를 고르는게 어려울 정도랍니다. 이게 바로 제가 ‘(‘섹스앤더시티’에 나온)매그놀리아 베이커리’나 (영화 ‘세렌디피티’에 나온) ‘세렌디피티3′ 대신에 ‘조의 피자’를 선택하게 된 이유랍니다. 이미 짐작하셨듯이, 컵케익이나 프로즌 핫 초콜렛을 포기하는것은 굉장히 어려운 결정이었어요.. ㅜㅜ 만약 이 레스토랑들에 가게 된다면 이 장소들도 꼭 소개시켜 드릴게요! 지금쯤 ‘Joe’s Pizza’가 슈퍼히어로랑 무슨 관련이 있는지 궁금하실 것 같아요. 혹시 스파이더맨이 조그마한 피자가게에서 아르바이트를 했던 것 기억하시나요? 한 번은 스파이더맨 옷을 입고 피자를 배달하기도 했었는데! 넵 그렇습니다. 이곳이 바로 스파이더맨이 일을 했던 피자가게랍니다! 처 음에 저는 그냥 가게의 사진만 찍으려고 했어요. 제가 이 날 밤에 약속이 있었기 때문에 정말로 무언가를 먹고싶지 않았거든요. 피자가게는 아담했고 사람들로 붐볐어요. 일하는 사람이 두 명 있었죠. (그리고 그 중에 한 명은 스파이더맨2 영화에 나온 사람이었어요!) 그리고 제가 피자를 보고 그 냄새를 맡은 직후에….. 아…. 피자는 저를 유혹했어요. >_< 저는 결국 피자 한 조각을 샀고, 그 피자 한 조각은… 제가 먹어본 최고의 피자중에 하나였어요. 피자를 먹는 동안, 저는 이 피자집을 방문한 여러 유명한 사람들의 사진들을 봤어요. 그리고!!!! 저는 바니 스틴슨의 사진도 발견했답니다! >_< 혹시 모르시는 분들을 위해, 바니 스틴슨은 ‘How I met your mother (한국에서는 I love you friends라고도 소개가 되었어요) 라는 미국의 시트콤에 나오는 캐릭터 이름이에요. 그치만 지금 이게 중요한게 아니니까… 넘어가도록 하죠. (혹시 바니의 사진이나 피자가게의 내부를 구경하고 싶으시다면, http://www.facebook.com/note.php?created&&note_id=185233664852205#!/notes/voa-asia/inside-of-joes-pizza/185233664852205을 방문해 주세요) 다 시 이야기로 돌아가서, 저는 피자 한 조각을 다 먹었답니다. 피자는 살짝 바삭하면서 동시에 치즈와 소스는 부드럽고 녹아내릴듯 촉촉했어요. 제가 처음에 피자 한 입을 물었을때… 아 이제 그만해야겠어요. 배가 고파서 죽을것 같아요.. ㅠ 저는 마치 영화속에 있는 것 같았고, 그리고 동시에 최고의 피자도 맛볼 수 있었어요! 스파이더맨 덕분에 여러분께 마침내 이 장소를 소개시켜드리게 되었답니다. 여러분은 언젠가 이곳에 가 보고 싶으신가요? 혹시 가게 되신다면 저 대신 꼭 페페로니 피자를 선택해 주세요! >_< 저는 신선한 모짜렐라 피자를 먹어서 페페로니는 맛보지 못했거든요. 여러분이 저 대신 드시고 저에게 어떤지 말씀해주셔야 해요!

#6. Central Park

It’s quite warm in Washington, D.C. nowadays. Spring is coming! Even though it’s was only in February that I visited NY, it feels like such an old story because the weather is changing a lot. So, I decided to show you this photo before it gets warmer and warmer.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you the most beautiful scene I’ve seen in N.Y.: Central Park in snow!

It was amazing, amazing, and amazing. It was even more beautiful than the night view of N.Y. that I saw from the top of the Empire State Building (for those who wonder, I will introduce this photo later too!). It feels like I suddenly fell into Wonderland covered in snow in the middle of a crowded city. There was snow everywhere except for the skyline of Manhattan. One guy was playing the violin and I could only hear my footsteps and violin sound. Everything was white and silent.

I know nothing about the Central Park in spring or summer. But I can be sure of one thing… I will never, ever forget the moment I walked around this place by myself.

#6. 센트럴 파크

제가 금요일에는 너무 바빴고 월요일에는 일을 하지 않기 때문에 (저 그래도열심히 일해요! ㅠㅠ), 여러분께 4일동안 이야기를 전할 수 없었어요! 여러분이 저를 많이 그리워했다고 생각해도 될까요?
워 싱턴 디씨는 요즘 꽤 따뜻하답니다. 봄이 오고 있어요! 날씨가 많이 바뀌고 있기 때문에, 뉴욕에 다녀 온 지 2주밖에 되지 않았는데도 그게 너무 오래전 일처럼 느껴져요. 그래서 제가 생각한것보다 조금 일찍 사진을 보여드리려고 해요_ 날씨가 더 따뜻해지기 전에요.

신사 숙녀 여러분, 제가 뉴욕에서 봄 가장 아름다운 풍경을 소개합니다 :
눈이 온 센트럴 파크에요!

여 긴 정말 너무 놀랍고, 놀랍고, 또 놀라웠어요. 제가 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩에서 본 뉴욕의 야경보다 더 아름다웠답니다. (혹시 궁금하신 분들을 위해, 이 사진도 나중에 소개할 예정이에요!) 많은 사람들로 붐비는 도시에서 갑자기 눈으로 뒤덮힌 원더랜드로 떨어진 기분이었어요. 맨하탄의 스카이라인만 빼고 제가 눈을 돌리는 모든 곳이 눈으로 뒤덮여있었답니다. 한 남자가 바이올린을 연주하고 있었고, 저는 제 발자국과 바이올린 소리 외에 아무것도 들을 수 없었어요. 모든것이 새하얗고 그리고 조용했어요.
저는 봄이나 여름의 센트럴파크에 대해서는 아무것도 모르지만 이것만은 확신할 수 있어요. 이곳을 혼자 걸어다녔던 순간들을 절대 잊지 않을거라는 것을요.

#7. The Empire State Building

You should follow me carefully, it’s quite high. Can you see all the buildings out there? There is the Chrysler building (which we saw in the Gotham city:) ), too!

See this beautiful Hudson River reflecting lights of Manhattan. Did you find Brooklyn Bridge, too? We are on the top of N.Y. now!

I remember the moment I got off the lift, and screamed in my mind, ‘I AM the king of the world!’ I have been to other tall towers before, but I think the fact that New York is the tallest city in the world (considering its buildings’ average heights) makes the Empire State building’s night view more special.

Now you probably remember that I told you that Central Park was even more beautiful than this. Since you are looking at this photo above, now you can tell me: which one is more beautiful Central Park, or the Empire State building?

#7. 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩

조 심해서 저를 따라오셔야 해요. 여긴 꽤나 높거든요. 저쪽에 있는 많은 빌딩들이 보이시나요? 우리가 고담시티에서 보았던 크라이슬러 빌딩도 있어요! 맨하탄의 불빛들을 비추는 아름다운 허드슨 강도 보인답니다. 여러분은 브룩클린 다리를 찾으셨나요? 우리는 지금 뉴욕시티의 꼭대기에 있어요!

저 는 제가 엘리베이터를 내려서 마음속으로 소리쳤던 순간을 기억해요. ‘나는 세상의 왕이다!’ 라구요. 물론 다른 높은 타워에도 가 본 적이 있지만, 뉴욕이 세계에서 가장 키 큰 도시 (빌딩들의 평균 높이를 고려할 때에)라는 점이 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩의 야경을 더 특별하게 만들어주는 것 같아요.

지금쯤 여러분들은 아마 제가 센트럴파크가 심지어 이 야경보다 더 아름다웠다고 한 걸 기억하실거에요.

#8. Korea way

Did you enjoy the Empire State Building? Now, it’s time for coming back to the earth! To Manhattan, again…… Surprise!!! Welcome to Korea!! XD

Some of you might not believe this is in N.Y. For me, it was unreal to see Korea in the middle of Manhattan. It just looked like one random street in Seoul. It was crowded and there were Korean signs, Korean restaurants, Korean karaoke, (FYI, it’s different from karaokes in America. It’s more personal. If you want to check, Google ‘Noraebang,’ which means ‘room for singing’) Korean banks, etc.

Isn’t it amazing that you can actually feel an entirely different culture and atmosphere in the middle of N.Y.? It wasn’t only for Korean people. Many different kinds of people enjoyed shopping in Korean grocery stores and having dinner in Korean restaurants.

After spending two months in the U.S.A., I finally could eat Korean food (for cheap, even!). I also got a lot of food from the grocery store. I almost cried when I found a stack of Korean food in the grocery store.

I missed Kimchi SO MUCH. I am usually good at eating American food, but sometimes I really need to eat Korean food. I guess one of the hardest things to deal with in another country could be food for me. It’s hard to cook what I cooked in my house because I can’t get ingredients I need. Even when I can get it, it is usually expensive.

#8. 코리아 웨이

엠파이어 스테이트빌딩에서 즐거운 시간 보내셨나요? 이제 땅으로 내려갈 시간이랍니다! 다시 맨하탄으로……. 짜잔!!!! 한국에 오신것을 환영합니다!! XD

여 러분들중 누군가는 이 곳이 뉴욕에 있다는 것을 믿지 않으실 수도 있어요. 저에게는 ‘한국을 맨하탄 한복판에서 본다’는 것이 비현실적이었거든요. 코리아웨이는 마치 서울의 어떤 길을 그대로 가져다놓은것 같았어요. 사람들이 많았고, 한글로 쓰여진 간판들과 한국 음식점들, 그리고 한국 노래방 (사실 노래방은 미국의 가라오케와는 많이 다르답니다. 혹시 미국의 가라오케 문화를 보고 싶으시면 karaoke를 구글에서 검색하세요!), 한국 은행 등등이 있었답니다.

뉴욕 한복판에서 완전히 다른 문화와 분위기를 느낄 수 있다는게 놀랍지 않나요? (저만 그런가요…) 여긴 한국인만을 위한곳이 아니었어요. 많고 다양한 사람들이 한국 식료품점에서 쇼핑을 즐겼고, 한국 음식점에서 식사를 하고 있었답니다.

미국에서 두달을 보낸 후에, 저는 드디어 한국음식을 먹을 수 있었어요 (게다가 값이 저렴하기까지 했답니다!) 식료품점에서 여러 음식을 사기도 헀어요. 식료품점에 쌓여있는 한국 음식들을 보고 저는 거의 울 지경이었어요.. ㅠㅠ
아, 진짜 김치가 너무너무 그리웠답니다. 저는 보통 미국음식을 잘 먹는 편이지만, 때때로 한국음식이 필요할때가 있어요. 다른나라에서 살면서 다루기 어려운 여러 문제들 중에 하나를 꼽으라면 단연 음식인것 같아요. 음식재료들을 구할 수 없고 구할수 있다고 해도 비싸기 때문에, 집에서 해먹던 음식들을 해 먹기가 어려우니까요.

#9. Think Coffee

Above is ‘Think Coffee’, which is in front of Washington Square in NY. I know that it’s not a popular place for other people except for South Koreans. But if you knew the Korean reality show ‘Infinite Challenge’ (무한도전), you might have see this place through the show.

This place is quite well known for Koreans (especially for the reality show’s fans) since the show is popular in Korea. When the six main characters in this show visited N.Y., they got one of their missions to do in this cafe. The director of the show chose this cafe to let people know about fair trade coffee, since this cafe uses fair trade coffee beans.

I thought it’s interesting that Koreans have a specific popular tour spot in the middle of N.Y., while other American living there actually don’t recognize it.

#9. 씽크 커피

위 사진은 뉴욕의 워싱턴 스퀘어 앞에 있는 씽크 커피’ 에요. 한국사람들을 제외한 다른사람들에게 별로 인기있는 장소는 아니에요. 그렇지만 여러분이 한국의 리얼리티 쇼 ‘무한도전’을 알고 계신다면, 아마 프로그램을 통해 보셨을 수도 있답니다.

무한 도전이 한국에서 인기가 있기 때문에, 무한도전의 팬이나 한국의 시청자들에게 이 장소는 꽤 알려진 편이랍니다. 이 쇼에 나오는 여섯명의 주인공들이 뉴욕을 찾았을 때, 그들은 이 카페에서 해야 하는 한 미션을 받았어요. 이 카페가 공정무역 커피를 사용하고 있기 때문에, ‘무한도전’의 감독은 사람들에게 ‘공정 무역 커피’에 대해 알려주려고 이 카페를 선택했답니다.

저는 한국사람들이 뉴욕 한복판에 한국사람들에게만 인기있는 장소 (관광지)를 가지고 있다는 것이 참 흥미로웠어요. 정작 그곳에 사는 미국사람들은 알고있지 못하는데 말이에요.

#10. China Town

In addition to small Korea in NY, I’d like to show you small China in NY.

It was amazing for me to see Chinatown everywhere around the world. I’ve seen Chinatown in Incheon, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Washington D.C., and New York! I feel like I’ve already been to China, even though I’ve never been there.

Above is part of Chinatown in NY, which is the biggest Chinatown I’ve ever seen. The funny thing was that all the Chinatowns I’ve visited so far are different from each other depending on the countries and cities. While D.C’s Chinatown is a lot more Americanized with American restaurants and stores, N.Y.’s Chinatown was so unique because it had its own atmosphere.

I remembered Incheon’s Chinatown that I visited when I was young. I could still find a lot of Korean food in the menu even in Chinese restaurants. I think Chinatowns all over the world are where we can find the best aspects of the Chinese & other cultures.

#10. 차이나타운

뉴욕에 있는 조그마한 한국 이야기에 더해서, 이번에는 뉴욕에 있는 작은 중국을 보여드릴까 해요.

전 세계에 있는 차이나타운을 보는 것은 정말 놀라운 일이었어요. 인천, 멜번, 시드니, 브리즈번, 워싱턴, 그리고 뉴욕에서 차이나타운을 볼 수 있었답니다. 저는 한번도 중국에 가 본 적이 없지만, 이제는 마치 중국에 가 본듯한 느낌이 들 정도랍니다.

위 에 있는 사진은 제가 본 것중에 가장 큰 차이나타운인 뉴욕 차이나타운의 한 모습이에요. 재미있는 것은, 제가 여태까지 방문했던 모든 차이나타운들은 도시와 나라에 따라 모두 모습이 달랐다는 점이랍니다. 워싱턴 디씨의 차이나타운이 미국 레스토랑들과 상점들로 더욱 ‘미국화’ 된 반면에, 뉴욕의 차이나타운은 그 특유의 분위기를 지니고 있어 굉장히 독특했어요.

그리고 저는 제가 어렸을때 방문했던 인천의 차이나타운을 떠올렸답니다. 저는 중국 레스토랑에서도 한국인 메뉴를 찾을 수가 있었어요.
전 세계에 있는 차이나타운은 중국과 다른 문화의 융합을 가장 잘 볼 수 있는 곳인 것 같아요.
